Big anti-abortion rally in Spain

18.10.09 / News / Author: / Comments: (0)

More than a million people are said to have taken part in a march in Madrid to oppose government plans to liberalise Spain’s abortion law.

Several dozen centre-right opposition party joined the demonstration, which was backed by Roman Catholic bishops.

Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero wants to introduce abortion on demand.

At present, a pregnancy can only be terminated in mainly Catholic Spain under specific circumstances.

The government wants the procedure to be available to all women up until the 14th week of pregnancy.

Most controversially, the draft law currently before parliament would also permit girls aged 16 and 17 to have an abortion without their parents’ knowledge.

It is the latest in a series of ethical issues which have pitted the Catholic right against the government, which has legalised gay marriage and made divorce easier.

Police estimates put the crowd at 250,000, but the regional government said that over a million had turned out, with the organisers claiming a turnout of two million.

‘Every life matters’

The march brought together more than 40 religious and civil society groups calling for the government to withdraw the draft bill.

“This new law is a barbarity,” said one protester, Jose Carlos Felicidad, from the southern town of Algeciras.

“In this country, they protect animals more than human beings,” he told AFP news agency.

A broad cross-section of Spanish society were represented, says the BBC’s Steve Kingstone in Madrid – old and young, parents with babies, priests, nuns, immigrant families and organised groups coached in from all over the country.

They gathered in the heart of Madrid under an enormous blue banner the height of a two-storey building emblazoned with the simple message: “Every life matters.”

The crowd stretched all the way up the city’s main avenue in what our correspondent says was a show of strength by Spain’s traditional Catholic right.

The demonstrators would have been hoping that lawmakers at the parliament nearby were listening, our correspondent adds, because it is they who in due course will vote on this controversial legislation.

Respect and rights?

Spain’s existing law, dating from 1985, allows abortion in cases of rape and when there are signs of foetal abnormality.

Spanish women can also end a pregnancy if their physical or psychological health is at risk. In practice, the last category has been used to justify the vast majority of abortions – of which there were 112,000 in 2007.

The government says the new law is about respect and rights for women, and that anyone wanting to terminate a pregnancy will first be explained the alternatives – including state help for young mothers.

It also claims its proposal will make abortion safer – by ensuring the procedure does not happen beyond 22 weeks of a pregnancy.

In recent years shocking cases have emerged in which doctors performed abortions on women eight months pregnant, with the justification that their mental health was under threat.

RCB thrash Daredevils by 8 wickets

BANGALORE: Bangalore Royal Challengers
and Delhi Daredevils crashed out of the Champions League Twenty20 after the
formers’ eight-wicket victory over their Indian Premier League opponents on
Saturday.

Scorecard

In
a dramatic League B Super Eight match at the packed Chinnaswamy Stadium, Ross
Taylor smashed a blistering 65 off just 38 balls to help Bangalore surpass the
target of 139 with nearly five overs to spare.

Earlier, Royal
Challengers Bangalore captain Anil Kumble led from the front by grabbing three
wickets to restrict Delhi Daredevils to a modest 138 for six.

Bangalore were only playing for pride as they were already out of
contention for a semifinal berth after Cape Cobra’s victory over Victoria
Bushrangers in another League B match earlier in the day.

The
eventful day saw the first match being delayed by one hour and 40 minutes and
reduced it to 17-over-a-side affair due to bomb scare.

The result of
the second match between the two Indian Premier League sides which though played
with full quota of 20 overs meant no Indian side will play in the semifinals in
the $6 million tournament.

South African side Cape Cobras and
Australia’s Victoria Bushrangers made it to the semifinals from League B as both
have collected four points each.

Delhi’s last match at home against
Cape Cobras on Monday thus will be rendered inconsequential.

Bangalore made a subdued start not wanting to take risk against
Delhi opening bowlers Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes, who bowled consistently
above 150 km per hour.

They also suffered a jolt in the second over
as Manish Pandey retired hurt after a desperate lunge forward to reach the
crease.

But, New Zealander Ross Taylor was in a punishing mood. He
showed his intentions clear by hitting three fours off Glenn McGrath in the
fifth over.

The actual run riot, however, began from towards the
midway mark as he hit boundaries almost at will before he was out off Nannes for
65 in the 14th over. He hit six fours and four sixes in his 38-ball stay at the
crease.

Taylor was though given life twice when he was on 18 and 32
– the first by Nehra and then by Rajat Bhatia off his own bowling and Delhi had
to pay a price for their mistakes.

The Kiwi hit two consecutive
sixes off Amit Mishra in the 12th over and raised his 50 from just 29 balls from
one such hit over the rope.

Bangalore were 68 for one after the 10th
over but the run riot by Taylor and latter by Dravid, who made unbeaten 32 off
26 balls (3X4; 1X6) and Virat Kohli, whose unbeaten 24 from 10 balls included
five fours, ensured that Bangalore reach 139 in 15.1 overs.

Dravid
ended the match in style hitting Nehra for a six. For Delhi, Nannes took two
wickets for 19 from his four overs. Amit Mishra was the most expensive,
conceding 59 runs without wicket from his four overs.

Earlier,
Kumble, who celebrated his 39th birthday on Saturday, was instrumental in
putting brakes on Delhi Daredevils who were on to a rollicking start after he
put the opposition in after winning the toss.

For Delhi, Virender
Sehwag top-scored with an explosive innings of 47 which he made from 29 balls
with the help of four fours and a six. Dilshan contributed 20.

Delhi
openers Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were intent to make Kumble pay for his
decision by hitting a torrent of boundaries in the first five overs.

The Delhi duo struck seven fours in the first five overs to take the
score to 47 for no loss with Sehwag, who hit three consecutive boundaries off
Praveen Kumar, contributing 31.

Sehwag struck two more fours off
Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the fourth over but lost his opening partner Gambhir two
overs later, edging a Dale Steyn delivery to Mark Boucher for 11.

Delhi lost way after the midway mark and once Sehwag was out in the
10th over, they failed to put up any worthwhile partnership.

Sehwag
was going strong when he was out, holing out to Manish Pandey off Roelof van der
Merwe at 77 for two.

Two wickets fell quickly, both claimed by
birthday boy Kumble, which reduced Delhi to 91 for four in the 13th over.

Kumble introduced himself in 11th over and in his third ball
dismissed Dinesh Karthik (2). Two overs later, he caught Dilshan off his own
bowling to reduce Delhi to 91 for 4.

Owais Shah (17) and Manoj
Tiwary (11) could not contribute much.

Cape Cobras beat Victoria by 8 wickets

17.10.09 / Cricket / Author: / Comments: (0)

BANGALORE: Cape Cobras captain Andrew
Puttick was unsure of his team line-up minutes before the start of the match as
the players were rattled after a security scare at the M Chinnaswamy stadium,
but that did not stop them from pulling off a convincing eight-wicket win over
Victoria Bushrangers in the Champions League Twenty20 on Saturday.

Scorecard

Chasing
a target of 126 runs in 17 overs, Cobras coasted home with six balls to spare,
Henry Davids scoring 69 off 54 balls. The South African team lost just two
wickets in the process. The win took them closer to a semi-final berth.

However the beginning of the day was anything but ideal for both
teams. The match was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes following a security
review by police after a “suspicious bag” was found in the stadium.

The Cobras were clearly nervous coming to the ground after the
development and Puttick admitted at the toss that he is not sure of the playing
eleven. It came out that two of his important players Herschelle Gibbs and Ryan
Canning had decided to sit out of the match.

But once Cobras walked
in front of the sizeable crowd, they were at ease and focussed at the job at
hand.

They got the perfect start when Monde Zondeki removed Rob
Quiney off the first ball of the innings. Another wicket tumbled in the third
ball-Brad Hodge-and Victoria were two down without opening their account. They
could never recover from the bad start.

Aiden Blizzard (22)
counterattacked, stroking four fours in 16 balls before fast bowler Rory
Kleinveldt ended his cameo.

With vital contributions from David
Hussey (19), skipper Cameron White (24) and Andrew McDonald (29 not out),
Victoria set up a competitive target.

However, Cobras’ opener Derek
Brand (29 off 15 balls) clobbered five fours and a six in the first four overs
to lay the foundation for the chase.

Davids and Brand added 30 runs
for the second wicket before the latter was run out.

Davids, who hit
seven fours and two sixes, and Jean Paul Duminy (18) then took Cobras to the
target.

Multiple releases for Bollywood actors this October

17.10.09 / Bollywood / Author: / Comments: (0)

October 2009 would go down in the history of Bollywood cinema as the month when maximum number of stars had more than one film of theirs releasing in a single month.

As of now, there are 10 films which are confirmed for October release. Do Knot Disturb and Wake Up Sid clashed with each other on 2nd October. Acid Factory was the sole biggie on 9th October though smaller films like 3 Nights 4 Days and Love Ka Tadka have also managed to sneak in. Current week is the biggest ever week of this year with Blue, All The Best and Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna getting into a battle royale. There is some peace in store on 23rd October with no film slated to arrive. However, there is another big clash in the offering on 30th October with Aladin coming face to face with London Dreams.

Now let’s have a look at the how some of the most prominent cast members would be seeing multiple releases in weeks to come. Beginning with Riteish Deshmukh, he is one of the leading protagonists in Do Knot Disturb which began the month for him. However, he would also end the month with his title role portrayal of Aladin.

Sohail Khan is also seen in a small role in Do Knot Disturb though he is the second lead in his home production Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna. On the other hand for Lara Dutta, this would be the biggest month of her career ever since she debuted with Andaaz since she was the centre of attraction as ‘Bebo’ in Do Knot Disturb. And now, she is painting the town Blue as the sole leading lady.

Coming to Acid Factory, this ensemble film featured quite a few actors sharing screen space. For Fardeen Khan, the film was special for more than two reasons. Not just that it brought him back with his Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena director Suparn Verma, it also featured him as a macho star. Its quite some image turnaround for him now though, since All The Best sees him putting his comic hat on.

Things intensify this week as Sanjay Dutt has a double bill in the form of Blue and All The Best. Enjoying the best of both worlds, he would be mixing action with comedy between both the films. That’s not all as a fortnight down the line, he would be seen as a lovable villain a.k.a. ‘The Ringmaster’ in Sujoy Ghosh directed Aladin. In this regard, he would be the only leading actor in 2009 who would be seen in three major films as a principal protagonist in a single month.

Ajay Devgan too won’t be having a breather for the most part of October. While he is going all out to promote his home production All The Best which also features him as a leading man, he would also be seen in London Dreams where he would be working in a Vipul Shah film for the first time. The film also features Salman Khan who is already riding high on the success of Wanted. However, before the arrival of this musical, Khan features in a musical romantic drama Main Aurr Mrs Khanna this week.

In nutshell, this is how the current scenario looks this October:

Salman Khan – Main Aurr Mrs Khanna and London Dreams
Sanjay Dutt – Blue, All The Best and Aladin
Ajay Devgan – All The Best and London Dreams
Riteish Deshmukh – Do Knot Disturb and Aladin
Lara Dutta – Do Knot Disturb and Blue
Fardeen Khan – Acid Factory and All The Best
Sohail Khan – Do Knot Disturb and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna

NSW face Somerset in a must-win match

17.10.09 / Cricket / Author: / Comments: (0)

HYDERABAD: New South Wales Blues will
have to forget the Trinidad & Tobago nightmare and get their acts together
if they desire to stay alive in the tournament as they take on Somerset Sabres
in a must-win League A match of the inaugural Champions League on
Sunday.

NSW’s campaign in the Twenty20 event were dealt with a severe
blow by a little-known Trinidad batsmen Kieron Pollard as he made a sensational
18-ball 54 to not only fashion an unimaginable four-wicket win over the
Australian side, but also took his team a step closer towards a semifinal
spot.

The Australian side not only have to beat Somerset by a good
margin, their fate will also hang on the outcome of the last League A match
between Trinidad & Tobago and Diamond Eagles.

On the other hand,
for Somerset the match is only of academic interest as they are already out of
contention for a semifinal berth having lost to Diamond Eagles on
Friday.

But the English county, who had a far from impressive outing
in the event so far, would be desperate to prove a point or two by drawing
curtains to their campaign on a winning note.

Interestingly, one good
thing for NSW is the return to form of their explosive opening duo of Philip
Hughes and David Warner.

Hughes and Warner seemed in ominous form
against the Caribbean side last night, sharing 121 runs for the first wicket to
set the platform for the big total.

The NSW middle-order is also
pretty balanced with the likes of Moises Henriques, captain Simon Katich, Ben
Rohrer up its rank.

However, what will be a major concern for Katich
is the team’s bowling department, which was considered as one of the best in the
tournament till their forgettable outing against Trinidad & Tobago on
Friday.

The likes of Brett Lee, Doug Bollinger, Stuart Clark and
Nathan Hauritz completely failed against the Caribbean side as they could manage
only three wickets in the match.

Henriques’ confidence as a bowler
was completely shattered by Pollard as he hammered the medium pacer to all parts
of the ground to take Trinidad to victory from an unimaginable
position.

But Lee and company will have to pull up their socks and
unleash fire from the word go against the toothless Somerset batting line-up to
help NSW’s cause.

For Somerset the tournament so far has been an
emotional roller-coaster as nothing went in their favour after the victory
against Deccan Chargers. Their problems were further compounded when Marcus
Trescothik left for home in the middle of the tournament citing stress-related
illness.

Apart from skipper Justin Langer and Charl Willoughby,
there are no big names in the Somerset batting as well as bowling line up. The
English side mainly consists of bits and pieces county players, who lack the
sting against a quality side boasting of international
experience.
