NEW DELHI: After completing 17,000
runs in the 50-over format of the game, Sachin Tendulkar scored his 45th ODI
century off just 81 balls during the fifth One-Day International against
Australia in Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad.
Earlier, Tendulkar
finally touched the magical 17,000-run mark in One-Day International cricket,
when he completed the formality of scoring seven runs needed to reach another
milestone in his glittering career.
Sanath Jayasuriya is second on
the list with 13,377 runs while Aussie captain Ricky Ponting has a lot of
catching up to do.
The moment Tendulkar attained that mark the
packed vociferous Rajiv Gandhi Stadium crowd jumped out of their seats and
erupted in jubilation.
Tendulkar’s wait to reach the 17,000-run mark
in One-dayers continued in Mohali as he missed the milestone by just seven runs
after getting dismissed for 40 on a dubious decision in the fourth ODI against
Australia.
The 36-year-old scored the requisite seven runs to put
another feather in his cap, which is already full of feathers but still managing
to have some more. The Indian batting legend has 44 One-day hundreds and 91 ODI
fifties under his belt.
The diminutive Mumbaikar, who made his ODI
debut Pakistan in 1989, is already way ahead of his contemporaries when it comes
to accumulating runs.
Rated as the world’s best batsman after
Australian legend Sir Donald Bradman, Tendulkar has an awe-inspiring Test
record. In the whopping 159 matches that he has played thus far, Tendulkar has
scored 12,773 runs at an average of 54.58.
The veteran batsman has
scored 42 hundreds and 53 half centuries in the longer format of the game.

CHITTAGONG: All-rounder Naeem Islam
hit a superb 73 not out off 90 balls to power Bangladesh to a thrilling
one-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the fifth and final ODI on Thursday.
Scorecard
The 22-year-old kept his cool and added 35 runs along with last man
Nazmul Hossain to snatch victory from Zimbabwe, with the hosts finishing the
series comfortable 4-1 winners.
Brendan Taylor hit a brilliant 118
not out, his maiden ton, off 125 balls to propel the visitors to 221 for nine
wickets, with Man-of-the-Series Abdur Razzak sharing the wickets with Shakib Al
Hasan and Mahmudullah.
Zimbabwe were smelling a pride-restoring
victory when they reduced the hosts to 187 for nine, with all Bangladesh’s big
names returning to the pavilion thanks to three run-outs and some tight bowling.
Then Naeem stepped up, hitting three consecutive sixes off Chamu
Chibhabha in a sensational 48th over, capitalising on a power-play, and then
scoring five runs in the 49th over to seal victory in front of 20,000 spectators
at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
“Right to the end I never
thought we would lose,” said Naeem, who was well supported earlier in his
innings by Mahmudullah.
Earlier, Taylor returned to form for the
tourists, hammering 118 off just 125 balls and holding his side’s innings
together when wickets tumbled at the other end against the rampaging Bangladeshi
spinners.
Taylor hit seven fours and four sixes and took 19 runs in
the last over to guide Zimbabwe to their best score in the series, which the
visitors had already lost after being shot out for 44 in the previous match on
Tuesday.
The Bangladeshi slow bowlers again spun a web around the
Zimbabwe batsmen, but Taylor first put on 62 with a promoted Elton Chigumbura
and took the score past 200 single-handedly after they were reduced to 113 for
seven.
Chigumbura, with a breezy 38, was the only other notable
scorer in the Zimbabwe innings.
Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan
said his top order and middle order failed again, but Naeem’s heroics pulled
them through for an unlikely victory.
“We thought the game was over
but as far as Naeem is concerned he played a really good innings and with good
confidence,” he said.
Zimbabwe drew first blood in the series,
posting a five-wicket victory in the first match on October 27.
But
led by their spinners, Bangladesh bounced back in the next three matches to
clinch the series with a match in hand.
Visiting captain Hamilton
Masakadza said they lost the match in Naeem’s explosive 48th over.
“I thought the guys fought hard, tried hard but that one over which
went for 18 to 20 runs changed things,” he said.

The UN says it will temporarily relocate 600 of its international foreign staff based in Afghanistan.
The personnel would return to work once security had been boosted at unsecured accommodation used by the UN, it said.
The transfer would not affect work such as aid delivery, as this was done by local Afghan staff, the UN added.
The move follows a dawn raid by the Taliban last week on a hostel in the capital, Kabul, which left five UN workers and three Afghans dead.
The attack on the private Bekhtar guesthouse in the Shar-i-Naw district last Wednesday was the deadliest on the UN in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001.
On Monday, also citing security concerns, the UN halted long-term development work in north-western Pakistan, a region on the border with Afghanistan that is widely regarded as a haven for Taliban and al-Qaeda militants.
‘No evacuation’
In a Kabul news conference on Thursday, Kai Eide, the head of the UN’s Afghan mission, said some of the staff – mostly “non-front line” personnel – would be moved within the country, some others outside.
Security was tightened in Kabul after the guesthouse raid
|
“We are not talking about pulling out. We are not talking about evacuation,” the Norwegian diplomat said.
The temporary relocation of staff was likely to take three to four weeks, the UN said.
The UN has up to 1,300 international staff based in Afghanistan.
The 600 staff to be withdrawn represent 12% of the total UN workforce – including local employees – in Afghanistan.
The personnel to be moved come from all UN agencies and different Afghan cities.
Meanwhile, British forces are continuing to hunt the Afghan policeman who shot dead five UK soldiers on Tuesday in Helmand.
They are investigating whether the gunman – who opened fire in a compound where the UK troops had been mentoring Afghan police – is linked to the Taliban.
In the guesthouse raid last week, UN employees tried to flee as three heavily armed Taliban militants hiding explosive vests under police uniforms attacked.
The three gunmen were shot dead.
The hostel – which had been used by the UN and other international organisations – was gutted by fire.
Foreign officials have warned that the Kabul government’s reputation for corruption and the recent crisis surrounding the fraud-marred presidential election are fuelling the Taliban insurgency.
Security has continued to deteriorate, despite the presence of more than 100,000 Nato-led troops, including about 68,000 Americans.
US President Barack Obama is currently considering a request from the US commander in Afghanistan for another 40,000 troops.
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown last month announced 500 extra British soldiers would be sent.
Are you in Afghanistan? Do you work for the UN and are you being moved? What do you think of the UN’s decision? How can the security situation in the country be improved?

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has denied Israeli allegations it was the intended recipient of weapons on board a ship seized by Israel’s military.
Hezbollah also called the interception of the ship, which was boarded near Cyprus, an act of “piracy”.
Israel said the arms cache, which it said was one of the biggest it had ever found, came from Iran and was bound for Hezbollah in Lebanon, via Syria.
Both Iran and Syria have denied the Israeli accusations.
The Francop, an Antiguan-flagged vessel, was boarded on Wednesday and towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod.
The ship had been carrying rockets, hand grenades, mortars and at least 3,000 missiles, the Israeli military said.
It also said cargo certificates backed its claims, though it did not show the documents.
But on Thursday Hezbollah issued a stiff denial.
“Hezbollah staunchly denies any link to the weapons that the Zionist enemy has seized from the Francop ship,” said a statement from the group reported by AFP news agency.
“At the same time Hezbollah denounces Israel’s piracy in international waters,” it said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the arms had been intended to strike Israeli cities.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in 2006 during which about 1,200 people were killed in Lebanon and about 160 in Israel.
Iran and Syria are widely held to be the main sponsors of Hezbollah.

Two of Indonesia’s senior law enforcement officials have resigned over a growing corruption scandal.
Deputy attorney general Abdul Hakim Ritonga and Chief Detective Susno Duadji were linked to an alleged plot to weaken the anti-corruption agency.
Their names came up in recordings in which the suspected plot was allegedly discussed by police and prosecutors.
The case is being seen as a test of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s promises to clamp down on corruption.
The president said more resignations or suspensions could be expected.
“I’ve advised the police chief and the attorney general to suspend those whose names were mentioned in the tape recordings and discharge them from their duties,” AFP news agency quoted him as telling a cabinet meeting.
The resignations of Mr Ritonga and Ch Det Susno Duadji came after calls for their dismissal from Indonesians who have taken to the streets protesting against the suspected plot to weaken the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Indonesia’s Watergate
Human rights groups say the KPK has become a target of the police force because it has been so successful in investigating and charging corrupt officials.
Indonesia is often ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in the world, but the efforts of the KPK have encouraged investors to believe the country is trying to clean up its act, says the BBC’s Karishma Vaswani in Jakarta.
The case, which has been dubbed Indonesia’s Watergate, has transfixed the nation, says our correspondent.
The tapes were played in a nationally televised session of the Constitutional Court, as part of the defence of two KPK officials arrested on bribery charges.
Corrupt officials
The recorded discussion is allegedly between a businessman and several people thought to be in Indonesia’s powerful police force and the attorney general’s office.
Discussions on the tapes revealed the speakers were involved in plans to significantly weaken the KPK by implicating two of their officials in bribery charges.
It is a powerful body that has gained the reputation of being tough on corrupt officials – including those in high places, says our Jakarta correspondent.
The KPK officials, Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto, were released on Tuesday.
