century went in vain as Australia trounced the West Indies by an innings and 65
runs on the third day of the first Test at Brisbane on Saturday.
19-year
old Barath became the youngest West Indian to score a ton overtaking George
Headley. The Right-handed batsman also became the youngest man to score a
century against Australia since Sachin Tendulkar did it almost 18 years
ago.
Barath was the only West Indian batsman to resist the Australian
attack as the Caribbean collapsed at 187 in their second innings after skipper
Ponting enforced the follow-on after lunch.
Ben Hilfenhaus was most
successful of the Australian bowlers as he took three wickets and gave away only
20 runs. Hilfenhaus scalped West Indies captain Chris Gayle and Shivnarine
Chanderpaul.
Hilfenhaus’s brilliant bowling figure earned him the
man-of-the-match award.
In spite of Australia wining the match, it
was Barath’s impressive century (104) that stole the show.
Apart from
Barath, Dwayne Bravo (23), Denesh Ramdin (16) and Sulieman Benn (15*) could
reach the double figures in the second innings of the Windies.
West
Indies batsman had a similar fate in the first innings where they managed to
score a mere 228 runs giving away all the wickets in reply to Australia’s first
innings score of 480 runs.
