Secret #1: Blending is key
Ok, well I sorta knew this, but I wasn’t sure HOW TO BLEND. You use three different colors: The base, usually a very light taupe, a highlighter for the crease and a main color for the lid, but how to get them to look as if they merge into each other like the colors of a rainbow? My secret: Start light then go darker. Brush the base color, apply the lid color and THEN apply the highlighter. Also, don’t be too heavy-handed or you’ll have to start over. Extra tip: Practice makes perfect. Play with your makeup a few days before a big event.
Secret #2: Choose shadows that make the color of your eyes pop
Gone are the days when beauty experts advised against blue shadow. Matching the color of your eye with a shadow actually brings the color out (think blue shadow on blue eyes). At the same time, contrasting colors make eyes pop too (think a deep jeweled blue shadow on deep brown eyes).

Secret #3: Never cover your browbone with deep color — unless you’re doing a cover shoot for Vogue
You don’t want the drama too much shadow brings. Apply shadow up to the browbone but don’t apply shadow ON the bone unless it’s a neutral color or a highlighter.
Secret #4: Highlighter can make or break your look
When applying dark shadow to the crease of your eye, be careful to blend only on the outside edge. Get to close to the eye and you’ll cause your eyes to look teeny and beady.
Secret #5: Set shadow with a great base
Primers are super hot right now because they help set makeup that stays for hours. I’ve found the secret to keeping shadow in place for hours is a shadow base. Almost everyone makes them but I swear by MAC Paints.

Secret #6: Shimmer is hot, but plays up wrinkles
Shimmer makes eyes really pop, but it also highlights heavy lids, lines and wrinkles. A great look for shimmer is to create a ‘nude’ lid, but apply a bit of gold shimmer to the browbone. Gorgeous!
Secret #7: Smokey is great, but keep it to the lid
Making up a smokey eye? Keep color to the lid and just under the lower lashline. Don’t extend color above the crease.
Secret #8: How to pair shadow with red lips
Remember the beauty rule ‘Thou Shalt Not Play up the Lips AND the Mouth.’ If you’re going for dramatic red lips (never out of fashion), cover unsightly blue lines on lids with a concealer or shadow primer and then keep eyeshadow light.

Secret #9: Make eyes brighter with white
A dot of white shadow or pencil on the inside of the eye near the tear duct will make eyes look brighter.
Secret #10: Go for color Taupe and lavender look great on all eye colors.
Also consider mixing shades if you bought a color that’s just too bold for you. Mixing an electric blue with taupe can turn out the most perfect color.

Step 1
Go shopping. The best makeup for black women to wear are the brands that have strong color pigments. MAC and Bare Escentuals are good brands that will work well on black women. However, if you’re doing this on a budget Black Radiance is a good drugstore brand.
Step 2
Wash your face. Before you apply any type of makeup, your face must be thoroughly cleaned. It’s easier to work with clean skin than dirty skin. This is why makeup artists typically clean your face before they begin applying makeup.
Step 3
Apply light moisturizer. Properly moisturized skin will feel better with the makeup on it. Makeup shouldn’t be uncomfortable, especially if you’re wearing it all day.
Step 4
Apply face primer. Face primer is just like paint primer but for your face rather than your wall. Face primer sets your skin and makes your makeup last all day. It drastically reduces the need for touch ups and cuts down on the colors fading. You may or may not be able to find a good face primer at the drugstore, but if you invest in it, your other makeup purchases will last longer. Bare Escentuals, Smashbox and Sephora make good face makeup primers.
Step 5
Apply eye makeup primer. Since your eyelids tend to move more, you should get a separate primer just for the eyes. Bare Escentuals makes a good eye makeup primer. It serves the same purpose as face primer but it works wonders on keeping your eye makeup bright all day.
Step 6
Apply concealer and/or foundation. Since you used the face primer, you may not need foundation or concealer but if you still want to use it, now’s the time to put it on.
Step 7
Apply eye makeup. Regardless if you wear multiple colors or just one color, your eye makeup primer will help this color go on strong and last for a long time.
Step 8
Apply blush. Black women tend to have to wear strong blush colors but not everyone looks good in bright red. Wearing bronzer as blush is another great way to play up your cheeks with a strong color without looking like a weird doll.
Step 9
Apply lip color. This can be lip gloss, lip stick or even a lip stain. Lip color is the one thing that may need to be reapplied throughout the day. There are extended wear lip colors like Revlon ColorStay and Clinique Stay the Day that promise all day wear but if you wear lip gloss, those aren’t an option since they are lipsticks. However, reapplying lip color may not be as much of a hassle since the rest of your makeup will now last all day.

Step 1
Wear concealer and foundation on olive skin only if you have an acne problem, scars or large pores. Because those with darker skin generally have less of these annoying problems, things are most likely better left alone. However, always wash your skin with a mild cleanser and apply an oil-free sunscreen before you begin your makeup. If you happen to have oily skin, apply a light dusting of powder instead of applying heavy liquid foundations.
Step 2
Choose a blush that highlights your skin tone, choosing peaches, apricots, tans or even bronze instead of the rosy pinks that are more suitable for pale skin. Don’t be afraid to layer the blush with more than one color for a more dynamic look.
Step 3
Use highlighting powder instead of bronzer which is better applied on pale skin. Select bronze colored highlighting powders, applying to any area of the face which catches light, such as the forehead, nose, cheekbones, chin and even the chest. Apply the powder lightly with a large soft brush, dusting before you apply eye and lip makeup.
Step 4
Select just about any color of eyeshadow you like, depending on the look you are going for; however, as with blush, olive skin tones should shy away from pinks as they only look artificial on your rich-colored skin. While you can easily wear greens, blues and purples when selecting eyeshadow, stick with darker colors instead of pastels. Additionally, you simply cannot go wrong with metallic silver and gold.

Step 5
Keep your eyeliner and mascara dark as well. Unless you are going for a while colored look, mascara should always be black. Eyeliner on the other hand can be a great way to spice up your look, choosing dark blues, purples, greens or even charcoal.
Step 6
Bring pink makeup into your look only for your lips; however, shades should match your natural lip color as much as possible. Wearing bright or pastel pinks is completely off limits for olive skin; however, a nice mauve or deep red is sensual and sexy. For a lighter daytime look, stick with simple, clear lipgloss.

Olive Skin
Use a tinted moisturizer instead of regular moisturizer but if you have dry skin you use tinted one at the top. To conceal your dark under eye circles. Use a yellow-toned concealer to blend nicely and cover it with a loose powder. Apply powder on your forehead and other shiny part of your face. Use a sheer, berry or plum color lipstick on your lips. You will sure look great.
Fair Skin
Use a moisturizer and foundation with SPF 15. They will protect your skin against the sun. Apply translucent powder to set your foundation. Then stroke peach blush on your cheeks. You can use the same one to line your eyelids too. Apply extra coat of mascara and use a sheer red lipstick for a quick finish.
Rosy Skin
Cover your blemishes and your uneven skin tones with a concealer same shade with your skin. Then apply a berry shade liquid gel blush with your fingers on your cheeks. Put on brown mascara onto your upper and lower lashes. Before applying your lipstick use a tinted balm but if you have rosy lips, apply clear gloss.
Dark Skin
Use an oil free makeup. Apply foundation using your fingers or sponge. Use a powder that will match your skin to set the foundation. Then a stroke of brownish red blush will look great on you. Finish it with a coffee or copper colored lip gloss on lips.
